My name is Hybrid!

In South Korea, a sonata was named after me; however, it sounds quite different from Beethoven.

Hyundai’s Sonata has been in production since the mid-1980s and is enjoying greater popularity particularly in the USA and Asia (the i40 model was developed for Europe around ten years ago). A plug-in hybrid version has been available since 2015, combining the technologies of electric and combustion vehicles.

I am sometimes haughty, but certainly not Frankenstein‘s monster.

The word “hybrid” is derived from the Greek ὕβρις. Hubris means “arrogance” or “presumption” and was often the cause of the protagonists’ downfall in ancient tragedy. Today, the word is also used to refer to a person’s extreme overconfidence, accompanied by a loss of reality, arrogance, and intemperance.

In armed conflict, I am open and covert at the same time.

The term “hybrid warfare” was coined by the political scientist Frank G. Hoffman. It is a flexible form of conventional and unconventional means of conflict such as cyber warfare, propaganda, fake news or election manipulation. By combining kinetic and subversive operations, the attacker attempts to remain undetected and thus avoid retaliation.
